Summary:

  • Replacement of AHU system at King’s College Hospital Cardiac Recovery Centre.
  • Installation of Dalair with Corridor AHU HTM compliant system.
  • Specialist crane lift required Network Rail Permit and Helipad communication.
  • Increased energy efficiency from reduction of operational AHUs.
  • New EC fans enhance patient safety through minimisation of operational downtime.
  • Project completed within short timeframe in line with critical environment needs with smooth handover to Artic’s incumbent maintenance team.

Project Overview

Artic supported King’s College Hospital in the recent successful replacement of an AHU system which served their critical cardiac recovery centre. The scope included the removal and decommissioning of the previous AHU systems on the buildings’ roof, as well as the installation and commissioning of a new AHU system.

Ensuring Project Success

The project required specialist manoeuvring utilising a large crane to lift redundant equipment from the roof during removal, as well as lift the new equipment into place for installation. Due to the proximity of the crane lift, Artic acquired a specialist permit from Network Rail and had a representative in attendance during the lift. The height of the crane also meant that the on-site project manager remained in constant communication with the King’s College Hospital helipad team in case of instances of emergency take-off and landing.

In line with the critical nature of the hospital environment, the project was required to be decommissioned and commissioned over the space of a weekend. Artic ensured every required person and specialist was on site to secure the successfully delivery of the project without any delays.

Results of the Project

Through the installation of a new AHU, the system now has EC fans which can support full load whilst other parts of the system are either being maintained or repaired. This provides King’s College Hospital with confidence that operational continuity will not be disrupted and therefore creating a safer patient environment that means no compromise on patient care. Due to a significant reduction in the number of AHU’s now in operation, this has supported a more energy efficient system overall that will provide King’s College Hospital with energy cost savings as well as support them on their journey to net zero. With all redundant equipment removed and the AHU system condensed, the roof now has additional space for expansion if required.

With Artic as the incumbent contractor on site, the equipment also had a smooth handover to the maintenance team who will oversee its successful operation in supplying ventilated, clean air to the cardiac recovery centre.
