Artic Building Services Business Unit Head Charlotte Divall

Day in the Life of a Commercial Business Unit Head

Get to know our Commercial Business Unit Head at Artic Building Services! We hosted a Q&A session with Charlotte Divall, our Commercial Business Unit Head a part of our Service & Maintenance Department at Artic. The Service & Maintenance Department is made up of multiple divisions that look after our vast portfolio of clients throughout the commercial, healthcare and higher education sectors. Each division works in unison to ensure the best service possible, and overseeing the divisions is our Business Unit Heads that are experts in service quality management.

Meet Charlotte Divall

Charlotte Divall started at Artic in 2010 as a Junior Administrator and through her hard work and experience in building services, has worked her way up into a position of leadership at the Artic Head Office as a Commercial Business Unit Head. With over a decade of experience, Charlotte has become an essential part of the commercial delivery team. To find out more about what her role means at Artic, we sat down with Charlotte and asked her a few questions.

Hi Charlotte, can you tell us a little about your role at Artic?

Of course! As a Commercial Business Unit Head my main priority is supporting our contract managers in delivering the best service possible to our commercial clients. Every day I make sure that our hard FM contracts are compliant and ultimately profitable for the business. I tackle each day with a new approach as every day, and what comes with it, is different.

My role isn’t just supporting behind the scenes either, I work in collaboration with our clients to make sure Artic’s solution is not just meeting their expectations but exceeding them too. As a Commercial Business Unit Head, I support Artic’s contracts that fall under the commercial building services sector. This includes sports stadiums, offices and other large multi-site portfolios.

What does a typical day for you look like?

There isn’t one! As a Business Head, every day is different, and I am always learning new things. I may be in a position of leadership, but that doesn’t mean I’ve stopped learning from those around me. As far as the structure for my day goes, I’ll check my emails to see if there is anything urgent which needs attending to from the night. Usually, our contract managers have everything in hand, but I like to make sure that there aren’t any emergencies that I need to prioritise. I am often taking meetings throughout the day with our contract teams, mobilisation and clients themselves. Our solutions are never fixed, so we are always adapting to make sure the client is happy.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

My favourite thing is definitely the people I work with. Every team at Artic is supportive, from engineering through to operations, the people at Artic are what make it a nice environment to work in. As a leader, I enjoy being able to support those around me, but it really is a team effort at Artic, we all help each other and that what allows us to overcome any challenge.

How did you get to where you are today?

Through a lot of hard work! I have had quite a bit of training since working at Artic which has added to my knowledge and understanding of the industry, allowing me to know how to best deliver our building services in a way that doesn’t only meet client expectations, but exceeds them too. I know that every day is a school day, and I’ll never assume there isn’t something else that I can learn to better both my personal development and my team.

What is the most important part of building services for commercial buildings?

What estate teams for commercial buildings look for in their building services would definitely be high levels of regular communication. One thing about Artic is that we take a personable approach to our service delivery, which means our clients always have a direct line of communication to not only their designated contract management teams, but also to senior service management like the Business Unit Heads, as well as the Managing Directors of Artic. We know building good relationships with our clients means going a step further than what we are contractually obligated to do; constant and clear communication is an essential part of this.
